Promise Details
Harris championed a “Maternal Health Initiative” to reduce Black maternal mortality, fund hospitals and expand Medicaid postpartum coverage. Several provisions were included in federal funding bills.
What was done
This was one of the most sustained and bipartisan health initiatives of the administration. Through HHS and CMS, Medicaid postpartum coverage extended to one year nationwide. Funding increased for training, rural care, and research. The White House released progress reports and dedicated $470 million in 2024 for maternal-health programs.
